Obituary for Rev. Gary Lee Rokenbrodt

Gary Lee Rokenbrodt was born September 14th, 1954 to Elwood Joseph and Lucile Ruth Rokenbrodt. He had one older brother, Harley. They lived in Albert Lea, MN until 1969 when the family moved to Dresbach, MN. During his high school years, he worked many hours at the family gas station as a full service attendant. He rode the bus across the Missippi River to attend Luther High School in Onalaska, WI. He took courses in Latin, German, and the Bible to prepare for being a Lutheran minister.

Newly graduated in 1972, he started two years of study at Concordia College of Milwaukee. His student life included two and half months traveling with the Gospel Crusaders Singing Team. He attended two years at the senior college in Fort Wayne, Indiana followed by three years at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri. His student vicarage occurred in Texas, where he served an Hispanic congregation perfecting his Spanish skills, logged seventy hours as a student pilot, and carried on beach ministry in Galveston. In 1981 he graduated as a pastor of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod.

His first parish upon ordination was in Alice, Texas. In 1983, he moved to Wisconsin to take a call to Zion of Turtle Lake and Immanuel of Clayton. On July 19th, 1986, he married Deborah Susan Danielson, a math and computer teacher from Cadott,WI and former missionary to Madagascar. All five of their children were born during the Turtle Lake years: Michael (1987), Daniel and David (1989), Kristen (1991), and Kathryn (1997). Gary accepted a call to St Peter Church in Hilbert, WI in December, 1997 followed by a move to serve St John Church in Wadena, MN in 2002.

In 2009, he transitioned into the Association of American Lutheran Churches. He accepted calls to Clam Falls Lutheran and Zion of Bone Lake near Frederic, WI. In 2012, the Rokenbrodts continued to serve Clam Falls Lutheran, while relocating to Chippewa Falls, WI to be near family and friends. In April, 2017 Gary also began driving for Chippewa Valley Airport Services and enjoyed many hours of conversation with his passengers.

In December 2019, he transitioned from the Clam Falls congregation to serving as vacancy pastor at Bethlehem Church in Altoona, WI. In the midst of Easter service preparations, Gary died of a heart attack on Wednesday, April 17th, 2019 at age 64.

Gary loved being a dad and spending time with his children. Favorite past times included camping, boating, and walks in Irvine Park. He loved planning trips and building projects. He was a part of the Chippewa Falls Leading with Power Men’s Group. His latest plans envisioned sparking a “Barnabas Conference” with intentions to encourage the clergy and lay men in bringing Jesus into American culture. He practiced sharing his faith with everyone he met.

He is survived by his loving wife Deborah; his three sons: Michael, Daniel, and David; his two daughters, Kristen and Katie (Samuel); and his brother Harley. He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister-in-law Ann Rokenbrodt.
